ABOUT THE Author

Author Keith Copeland

Author Keith Copeland is a licensed psychologist in North Carolina with a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology and more than 40 years of experience helping individuals understand human behavior, strengthen relationships, and make meaningful life changes. Alongside his work in psychology, he serves as Associate Pastor at The Word Faith Center Church in Goldsboro, North Carolina, where he teaches God’s Word and encourages spiritual growth through biblical truth. His unique combination of professional knowledge and ministry experience provides the foundation for his writing and teaching. Drawing from both faith and psychology, Author Keith Copeland created the Functional Dysfunction workbook series to help readers honestly examine their thoughts, feelings, choices, and relationships through Scripture. Using the lives of Jacob and Esau, Rachel and Leah, the workbooks encourage self-reflection, growth, restoration, and positive function in life. Rather than focusing on perfect people, Keith emphasizes understanding the impact of choices and discovering opportunities for lasting change. His desire is that every reader gains greater self-understanding, restores important relationships, applies biblical principles to everyday life, and becomes a positive influence within their family, church, workplace, and community.

Keith was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, and attended elementary through high school in the city’s school system. He spent most of his summers playing and enjoying the big three sports football, baseball, and especially basketball! Keith says the Michigan years, while mostly enjoyable, had their periods of difficulties and troubles that had him spiraling somewhat out of control seeking fun and pleasure with drugs. Keith also became a father at a very young age with the births of his son, Andre, his daughter, Karen, and his son Keith Michael (d. 2002). He was strongly influenced by the culture of his peers and made some bad choices that could have gone so wrong had it not been for strong family support that encouraged Keith to go into the military.

Keith Copeland became a North Carolina transplant while serving in the United States Air Force at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, NC. He served for four years in the USAF and was discharged in 1974. During his military time, he met and married his first wife, Brenda (d. 1990). They became a family of four with the adoption of her son, Marcus (d. 2024) and the births of their two sons, Kiapo in 1975 and Chris in 1980 (d. 2025). Son number four, Kenneth, was born later in Detroit in 1983, since they had relocated back to Michigan at the time. The move back to Michigan was also the time that Keith answered the call by God into the Christian Ministry and the commitment and responsibility that the calling entails.

Keith’s post-high school academic journey consists of an Associate of Arts Degree (1977) from Lenoir Community College, in Kinston, NC, a Bachelor of Arts (1979), and a Master of Arts (1992) Degree from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC.

Keith became a widower in 1990 and resolved that he was probably just going to be a single father raising four sons. “I had my short list of what she must be or what she must have if I were to marry again.” After making a declaration to God about what he thought was going to be impossible: “God, there is no way I’m going to meet a single woman with kids who has never been married.” God showed Keith that with Him, all things are possible! He also showed Keith His sense of humor. Shortly after that declaration, Keith met and married his wife Deborah (2 boys, single, and had never been married) in 1991!

Their blended families consisted of his four boys, her two boys, Michael and Kevin, and then two more guys after the births of their sons Edward in 1991 and David in 1994! “My own basketball team–starting 5 and 2 bench!” For a period of time, their friends and members from their church adapted a line from the song, Father Abraham Had Many Sons, and plugged in father Keith had many sons… because he and Deborah had a combined total of 11 kids! Their kids are all grown now with families, stories, and lives of their own. Keith says, “Apart from the three that have gone on to their eternal lives, Deborah and I treasure the times when our kids (Karen, Andre, Kiapo, Michael, Kevin, Kenneth, Eddie, and David) travel from far and near to spend time with us!”
